IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has decided to temporarily suspend its Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026. The airline attributes this decision to extended airspace restrictions, longer flight durations, and escalating operating costs. These issues are part of broader challenges facing international aviation, such as geopolitical tensions, higher fuel prices, and disruptions in flight routes that have significantly driven up the costs of long-haul operations.
In response to these challenges, IndiGo will return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft it leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. These aircraft were initially acquired in early 2025 to facilitate the carrier’s expansion into European markets before the arrival of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension, IndiGo emphasizes that this move is temporary and does not impact its other long-haul international services, which will continue as scheduled.
The airline acknowledges that its expansion into Europe has been met with strong customer demand, bolstering its presence in vital international markets. Nonetheless, the financial viability of the Manchester route has been compromised by longer flight times due to airspace constraints, along with rising aviation turbine fuel costs and foreign exchange fluctuations.
Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, described the suspension as an unfortunate but necessary decision given the current operating conditions. He highlighted the positive customer response to the service and reiterated the airline’s commitment to resuming the route when conditions improve. Meanwhile, IndiGo is exploring alternative ways to maintain its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways while advancing its international growth strategy.
To assist affected passengers, IndiGo is offering notifications in advance of the suspension, along with support in arranging alternative travel plans or providing refunds where applicable.
