In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand’s Anutin Charnvirakul and France’s Emmanuel Macron have agreed to elevate their countries’ relations to a strategic partnership during official talks held in Paris. The two leaders convened at the Élysée Palace to discuss a broad range of issues aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology sectors. Their dialogue also touched on regional developments concerning Cambodia and Myanmar.
A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to bolster collaboration in several high-growth industries including alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its commitment to supporting the conclusion of negotiations on the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement within the year. This agreement, initially launched in 2013 and suspended in 2014 before resuming in 2023, is seen by Thai officials as a potential catalyst for significant economic opportunities for both Thailand and the EU.
Additionally, both nations committed to strengthening defense and cybersecurity measures, with a focus on combating cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On regional issues, Thailand emphasized its dedication to peacefully resolving border disputes with Cambodia through dialogue and adherence to international law.
The governments also announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for 2026-2028, which lays the groundwork for a formalized strategic partnership. This plan underscores the mutual interest in deepening ties across various sectors.
During his visit to France, Anutin met with executives from leading French companies including Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group. These meetings were aimed at encouraging further investment in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries. French business leaders expressed confidence in Thailand’s investment climate, with Airbus confirming plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations within the country.
