The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly bolstered the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology, setting the stage for advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 has served as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite. Originally designed to last five years, it continues to operate in 2026, now marking its 14th year in service. This initiative has propelled Vietnam beyond basic satellite operations, with Vietnamese engineers receiving extensive training in both France and Vietnam from 2011 to 2013. They gained skills in system design and satellite management, eventually moving from following set procedures to crafting their own technical solutions.
Vietnam’s development of an integrated remote-sensing system has been another key achievement of the program. This system encompasses everything from imaging requests to satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images that aid in environmental and natural resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security-related activities. Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, emphasized the program’s role in establishing a crucial technical and human-resource foundation for upcoming satellite projects. Nonetheless, he pointed out that achieving greater technological autonomy will necessitate advancements in areas such as satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter in this bilateral cooperation began in May 2025 during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam. During this visit, a declaration of intent for long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation was signed by the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This partnership is exploring the development of a next-generation Earth observation system and the technological prospects for a proposed VNREDSat-2. Future collaborations are anticipated to enhance Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications.
The emphasis on strengthening Vietnam’s participation aims to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology. Focus areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads present opportunities for Vietnam to build stronger domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to enable Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future generations of satellite technology independently, moving towards a self-reliant technological future.
