UK Launches Inspections on Luxury Properties for New Mansion Tax Surcharge

by admin477351

The UK government is set to introduce a new council tax surcharge aimed at high-value properties, popularly known as the “mansion tax,” which is slated to commence in April 2028. This new measure will target homes worth over £2 million, with potential inspections by tax authorities to assess the property’s value. These inspections could involve evaluating internal features and measurements to provide an accurate valuation.

Under the proposed taxation framework, property owners will face a tiered surcharge based on their property value. Homes valued between £2 million and £2.5 million will incur an annual charge of £2,500. Properties worth up to £3.5 million will see a surcharge of £3,500, while those between £3.5 million and £5 million will be taxed £5,000. For properties exceeding £5 million, the surcharge will be £7,500 annually. Importantly, this surcharge will function independently of the existing council tax and is expected to rise annually in line with inflation rates.

Inspectors will evaluate various factors to determine property value, including the size of the property, architectural features, and the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and storeys. Property owners who obstruct these valuation efforts intentionally may face a penalty of £200. Additionally, failing to provide necessary information without a valid reason could lead to fines of up to £500.

The government assures that inspections will be conducted following official guidelines and by prior arrangement with property owners. This approach aims to ensure transparency and cooperation throughout the valuation process.
