Meta has reached a significant settlement with California and 28 other U.S. states, agreeing to implement substantial changes on Facebook and Instagram. This resolution addresses claims that the platforms have been detrimental and fostered addictive habits among teenagers. The settlement mandates the introduction of stricter protections for young users across the United States, such as daily usage caps, limiting notifications during school hours, and restricting overnight access to the apps. Additionally, Meta will eliminate certain filters that promote plastic surgery images to young audiences.
As part of the agreement, Meta could potentially pay up to $18 billion, with funds distributed among the states over a decade, pending court approval. California is poised to receive between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion, while Colorado might obtain about $615 million. The accusations against Meta included claims that it intentionally designed features to keep young users on its platforms for extended periods and collected data from children under 13 without appropriate parental consent.
While Meta has refuted any allegations of wrongdoing, the company has emphasized that the settlement would be more impactful if other leading social media platforms, such as TikTok, Snap, and YouTube, adopted similar protective measures.
