OpenAI Unveils Teen-Focused ChatGPT Featuring Enhanced Safety Protocols

by admin477351

OpenAI has unveiled a new version of ChatGPT tailored for teenagers aged 13 to 17, with enhanced safety measures and protections suitable for their age group. This initiative aims to create a safer environment for young users engaging with AI for schoolwork, daily inquiries, and social interaction. The teen-specific version of ChatGPT limits exposure to content related to self-harm, suicide, and sexual or romantic topics.

In an effort to support healthy AI usage, the platform includes features that allow parents to set quiet hours during which their teens are unable to access the service. Additionally, parents may receive safety notifications in certain high-risk scenarios. OpenAI has introduced further safeguards around sensitive subjects, such as eating disorders, and directs users to offline support when needed.

The company is also focused on preventing the development of unhealthy emotional attachments between teenagers and the chatbot. The teen version is specifically programmed not to imply that the AI has personal feelings, consciousness, or emotions in relation to the user.

To ensure minors are properly identified, OpenAI utilizes age-assurance technology, which estimates a user’s age based on their interaction with the service. Those identified as under 18 are automatically placed into the teen version, which comes with additional protections. This targeted approach aims to foster a healthier and more appropriate interaction with AI among younger users.

For educational purposes, ChatGPT for Teens is designed to encourage students to engage with problems and develop solutions rather than simply receiving answers or completing assignments. This approach intends to position AI as a supportive study tool rather than a substitute for traditional learning methods.
