In a notable shift among Europe’s airports, Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow as the continent’s busiest airport in July. During this month, Istanbul Airport accommodated 8.15 million passengers, slightly ahead of Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This development has intensified the discussion around Heathrow’s need for expansion, especially as the airport experienced a 1.5% decline in passenger numbers from July of the previous year, while Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase.
The recent figures have reignited calls for the UK government to give the green light to Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Currently operating at nearly full capacity with its two runways, Heathrow’s £33 billion expansion plan aims to boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers. Airport officials argue that this expansion is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism sectors.
Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from its larger site and 24/7 operations. It currently operates three runways and is planning to add a fourth by the end of 2026, further enhancing its capacity and appeal as a major international hub.
While Heathrow grapples with capacity challenges, other UK airports have reported record numbers. Both London Stansted and Manchester airports experienced their busiest July ever, with passenger figures reaching 3.1 million and 3.4 million, respectively. These numbers highlight the increasing demand for air travel within and beyond the UK.
